History
The university was begun as Detroit Medical Higher, which ultimately became the academy's medical schoolhouse, in 1868. Other colleges had their beginnings in similar programs in 1881 (Educational activity) and 1917 (Liberal Arts). The institution became a four-year caste-granting institution in 1923.
